Operation SAM: "Supporting All Military," one troop at a time 1

Express, Las Positas College, Livermore, CA

19 hours ago by cassie kolias

It's Saturday and the sun is blinding to any exposed eyes. The day is in its infancy, yet the dedicated people of Operation SAM are awake and ready for an eight hour day of packing, taping and labeling boxes. The four storage rooms at Will Store Super Storage in Livermore are brimming with people, and an array of canned goods, hygiene products and boxes both filled and empty, block the walkways in and out of the crammed rooms.

Are you looking for a free ride?

The Breeze, Chaffey College, CA

With gas prices on the rise, Chaffey is exploring ways to help students get to class on a budget - including year-round bus service, free of charge.

The idea is certainly ambitious, but negotiations with the San Bernardino-based bus provider Omnitrans are already underway.

Planned Parenthood keeps killing them softly

The Daily Barometer, Oregon State University, OR

25 minutes ago by Dan Fitzpatrick

I'm surprised the Black community in Portland isn't up in arms right now - one of their new neighbors has a proven track record of anti-Black bigotry and violence. A new Planned Parenthood center is being built in Northeast Portland on Martin Luther King Boulevard.

Here's Huey: makeover at Chino Airport

The Breeze, Chaffey College, CA

2 days ago by Hortencia Rangel

Chaffey's military helicopter is missing in action. Back in the mid-1990s, the National Guard unit in Rancho Cucamonga had four helicopters to donate. What better timing than having an adjunct aeronautics instructor from the National Guard take one of the flyable "Huey" birds off the hands of the local military unit.

We hardly knew him, and we must now appreciate a full life in death

Oregon Daily Emerald, University of Oregon, OR

I never met Todd Doxey personally. If I had ever spoken to him or crossed his path, I was unaware. Todd Doxey only existed to me in the form of numbers. Four. Number of consecutive weeks Doxey served as player of the week on the football scout team last season.

Fuel prices have LTD eyeing cuts in the future

Oregon Daily Emerald, University of Oregon, OR

11 hours ago by Robert D'Andrea | Senior news editor

Lane Transit District will consider cutting services this year, despite record ridership, because of high gas prices. The district will also raise group passes such as the ASUO's by more than eight percent in 2009, which will likely disconcert an executive team that campaigned on increasing campus bus service without paying significantly more for it.

Amavizca-Murua uses art to combat 'femicide'

The Breeze, Chaffey College, CA

2 days ago by Hortencia Rangel

Director and writer Ruben Amavizca-Murua is a native of the industrial town of Mexicali, Baja California. His mother was a seamstress who worked at one of the first maquiladoras in Mexicali decades ago.

So it was no wonder when Amavizca-Murua stumbled across the news of a mass "femicide" occurring to Mexican maquiladora females along the border, it struck an emotional chord within him.

Dear New Yorker editor: We're not stupid

Oregon Daily Emerald, University of Oregon, OR

The controversy over The New Yorker's cover depicting an anti-American Barack Obama in the Oval Office is unquestionably rooted in the darkest ideologies of scare tactics and fear mongering.

Your magazine thinks that the caricature is a satirical lampoon of the mudslinging the right-wing uses to smear Obama.

Practice what you preach, but leave my gun alone

Mustang Daily, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, CA

Oh boy! Another cliché letter to the editor with a lousy opening, easily refutable content, and an impractical solution proposal - this time written by a professor. Jackpot!

I'm responding to Edward Schmid's letter to the editor entitled "Education, not guns," which was responding to Marlize van Romburgh's article "The amendment that protects your independence.

Most world-class athletes would probably never consider even momentarily awaking from the Olympic dream.

They wouldn't put things at risk. They wouldn't tinker.

And they likely wouldn't, in the eyes of many, jeopardize their chances by giving in to an entirely separate competitive urge to play another sport.
